Race for Life moved to October 24

Posted in Race For Life on 10/14/2009 by ganns

The Real Life Foundation has announced that Race for Life 2009, the annual fun run for the benefit of the Real Life Scholars, has been moved to October 24. THANK GOD! I feel that I really need extra time to prepare for that race, ugh.

I’m also compiling a list of running songs for that. It’s kinda exciting – I’ve got a whole bunch of new songs, including Leighton Meester’s Somebody to Love, David Guetta’s When Love Takes Over, Super Junior’s Sorry Sorry, and so many others. Can’t wait for this run!

Race For Life 2009

On October 10, 2009, the Real Life Foundation will host its annual Race For Life. For only PHP350, you can help sponsor a scholar of the Real Life Foundation, plus run with hundreds – if not thousands – of other civic-minded runners and running enthusiasts. More information here.

I don’t want to give too much away, but suffice it to say that the Future Thin Guy is going to do more for this race than just run. Details on September 20!

Race for Life results and on stress & binge-eating

Posted in 10000 Steps a Day Journal, Race For Life on 11/28/2008 by ganns

So the Race for Life results are in. I was 326th out of 755. 5K in 40:58, which was a little over my target of eight minutes a kilometer (it’s 8:12, to be exact). I chalk that up to the out-of-the-gate-running that I did, which was a mistake. Still, it’s a better performance than my initial run, when I came in 290th out of 330 runners. For that particular run, I did 8K in approximately an hour and nine minutes, for an 8:41/km clip.

I can’t believe it. I actually improved over the previous run? (Well, in fairness, it was only 5K, whilst the first run was 8K.) That’s such welcome news! I feel better!

Today at work, things were rough. I should’ve dealt with it with a walk, which I really really really wanted to do, but instead, I stayed at my Macky (my laptop) and worked through the stress. The end result: I barreled my way through five pieces of chocolate (thanks, Archie) and my leftover tuna, corn, and mushroom stir-fry. Not the best way to handle it. Worse, I had a (mayo-free) Whopper for dinner, sans fries, and a bottle of water. No one to blame for this binge other than myself. Plus, the walking wasn’t spectacular, as I tallied a little over 3,000 steps. Man, I gotta get moving again!

Tomorrow’s gonna be great: I’m going to do weights or run in the morning, then ensure the day is packed with a healthy diet and affirming activities, not the toxic workload I dealt with today. It’s going to be better because I’m going to rely on God for it.

My hamstrings are porky

By all indications, the Race for Life fun run last Saturday was successful. More than 2,000 people showed up – not all on time, but whatever – to show their support for the Real Life Foundation, which was awesome.

What wasn’t awesome, however, was my time. There were two things going against me: 1) I didn’t prepare well enough for this race, running only once the week prior, and 2) I made a huge mistake and let myself get carried away by the thrill of the run, so I ran right away, an amateur’s mistake. I was winded by the end of the first 1.5 kilometers, and pretty much walked the rest of the way. Wrong. I won’t make that error again. Finished a little over 40 minutes, which was well below my target. Bad bad bad.

The next day, I woke up sore all over. My hamstrings, in particular, were exceptionally tight. My quads weren’t giving me sweet relief either, so right now, I feel like a Majestic Ham, except my body isn’t majestic at all. Argh.

Oh well. You fall off the fitness horse, you get back on. However do you expect to become a stud if you don’t do the runs?

One day to go!

Tomorrow’s Race for Life! More than 1,000 runners have signed up in solidarity to show their support for the Real Life Foundation and its scholars. This is so exciting!

I’m not as ready for Race for Life as I was for Run Against Pain because this week was just so bad. One day to run, the rest of the week was just weights because of this nasty weather. Plus the workweek was killer. And tomorrow evening is my grandmother’s 90th birthday party, so I have to prepare for that too. This week was just BAD. Luckily, it’s just five kilometers, and I’m not looking to break any records.

I hope to see some of you there tomorrow. Future Thin Guy’s second run. Woot!

Who’s back, baby?

Did a brief 4K today just to get myself back on track in preparation for Race For Life. (Sali na!) These were my times per kilometer.

1 (Brisk Walk) 10:08

2 (BW) 9:47

3 (Jog) 7:14

4 (BW) 9:20

Perry says I did 5,362 steps, good for a 260-calorie burn. I can totally live with this initial time, considering I haven’t run in a week. I don’t want to be all crazy and go 10K right out. The important thing is to keep at the program. Tomorrow, I’ll probably do weight training to get myself back on Body For Life.

A couple of things I also need to remember:

  1. Since I am in total and complete control of myself for the next week since my wife will be out of town, I’m thinking of high protein salads for lunch and dinner, with carbs only before my morning runs. Snacks are back to fruits and hard-boiled eggs – goodbye, chips, and good riddance! – and
  2. I need to work on Video Blog #4. I’m thinking of building that up towards Race For Life. Sali na sa Race For Life! I’ll definitely be there!

I heart comments! Leave me a note!

Oh, did I mention Race for Life? Sali na sa Race For Life!
