Determination rocks my socks

I did not want to run this morning, thanks to a sleep-inducing combination of Yellow Cab pizza and KFC chicken last night. (It was my family birthday celebration, I had a right. Shut up!)

When I stepped out of the house, I found a neighbor’s car parked haphazardly across my driveway. I asked my son’s nanny – who was curiously awake at 5 in the morning – to open the gate as wide as she could and I inched my Hyundai Getz right out. (Thank God it’s a Getz; if it were my old Toyota Revo, there’d no no way I could take my car out.)

But I did. And I ran. And I exceeded my expectations. I set Edward for 5km – the first time I did that, really; all previous 5kms run were runs that surpassed the goal of 4km I set for each run – and ran 6km! Yea for me! It was a 6’54″/km clip, a little slower than what I did the past two runs, but then again, those were at 5km.

I’m so psyched I might actually run again tomorrow!

… a Men’s Health Philippines subscription for a year! It’s so thoughtful of her! I almost always buy Men’s Health Philippines, as well as U.S. editions on back-issue at Filbar’s, so this was a nice surprise.

I didn’t really want anything this year. I’ve got a good pair of shoes, an iPod full of great workout tunes, a Nike+, and a determination to reach 160lbs by the end of the year. I would’ve liked some dumbbell plates sana, but that’s a nice-to-have, not an absolute need.

Yesterday, I intended to buy a screen protector for Bella. I went to CD-R King, though, and found a screen protector for PHP50! WILD! So I bought that, and saved so much money! (The imported ones at Digital Walker cost up to PHP800!) Well, I didn’t quite save that much because I bought a screen protector for my son’s DS-Lite, as well as a Lego speaker for my wife’s iTouch and a wireless FM transmitter for my Hyundai Getz.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes here and on Facebook. (Add me up!) 2009’s going to be a great year, man, even if I’m no longer on the calendar. (32 years old, oi, I’m starting to feel the crunch.) Oh well, at least I’m still on the Bingo card.

Tomorrow, I run! And since it’s a Sunday, I’ve got a little extra time, maybe I’ll gun for 6km! Come on now!

37 kilometers for February! WOOT!

Today, I ran 5.3km and surpassed my February goal of 37km! Who’s the man, who’s the man?!

Unfortunately, the man ain’t me. I’ve gained another two pounds, bringing me now to 204. Lord Almighty, what is going on?!

(I know the answer, and I repent. It’s Selecta Cookie Chip Heaven! Oh noes!)

Starting returning to a healthier food lifestyle this morning. Egg white and salmon omelette for breakfast. Lunch no rice. Come on!!

I’m just 2 kilometers away from my February goal!

I uploaded my latest run this morning, a 5.22km run that was my longest solo run yet, and my second-longest, after my maiden run, an 8km October run titled Run Against Pain. The 6’50″/km pace was my fastest yet. Yay me!

I also discovered the “World Runs” feature on NikePlus.com.ph. It allows you to compare your progress with other Nike+ runners worldwide. What a cool feature!

I am 251st in the Philippines for males aged 30-39 in terms of most distance run ever. That’s 251 out of… 251? Hahaha. (My runner friends and colleagues AdoBernardo and NixonNg are 9th and 10th respectively. Panalo po kayo!) Overall, for distance run, I’m 530,286. Hahaha.

The website is under maintenance right now, but based on my calculations, I must’ve run a total of a little over 35 kilometers so far in February. That means I’m just two kilometers away from my February goal! YAHOO!

Hello again, Lance Armstrong!

I did another 5km today, but barely. I started out strong, but started to fade early in the run, so it was all I could do to keep going. My motivation was this: today, I’m going to finish that 5km even faster than I did the other day.

And yea for me, I did! I ran 5.11km today in 35:24, faster than my 5.08 yesterday in 35:57. My pace the other day was 7″06/km; today’s was 6″55. I ran slightly further, faster.

I guess I’m particular about these things right now because I’ve gained weight in the past two weeks. I’m now back at 200. (Actually 202.) So I need these runs to not just help me burn that weight gain, but to motivate myself back to below 200. One pound a freakin’ week, how hard is that??

I also recently discovered “Personal Bests” on Edward (my Nike+ accelerometer). It’s a cool little app.

Your best 1km: 6’36”

Your best 3km: 20’53”

Your best mile: 10’45”

Not fast by any stretch of the imagination, but it does help me clarify my goals and set benchmarks for my progress. By the end of the year, I propose the following goals:

  • I’d like to be able to run 1km in less than five minutes
  • I’d like to be able to run 3k in less than fifteen minutes
  • By the end of 2010, a six minute mile

And oh, Lance Armstrong came on again, congratulating me on my “longest run to date.” Thank you, Mr. Armstrong! Question: how far do I have to run to get Paula Radcliffe? 10km? 21km? Come on!

Woot! My 5K is seven minutes faster!

Today, I ran 5k, a 25% increase over the typical 4 to 4.5 kilometers I’ve been running for the past few weeks. Edward, my Nike+ accelerometer, tells me I registered the 5K in 35:57, which is, while by no means close to fast, means I ran it seven minutes faster than my debacle at Race for Life, where I sputtered in at 40:58. A new personal best! Yea!! Joan Benoit Samuelson congratulated me again. (No offense, Joan, but I was hoping for Paula Radcliffe. How do I get a message from her? Run a 21K?)

Race for Life was November 21, 2008. Almost two months later, I’m glad my weekly runs have shown tangible, real-time results. Back in November, I ran at approximately 93.5 kilos; today, I ran at a little over 89 kilos. Obviously, when you’re running with 4.5 kilos less, you’re bound to get faster! HA!

I look at the time and I beam with joy. 7″06/km is nothing compared to almost every single person on my blog roll, but come on, that’s still so much better than the pathetic almost 8″00/km clip I registered at Race for Life. According to Nike, since I started using Edward, I’ve registered an average of 7″18/km (for eight runs), which is pretty good, considering that my first four runs were all above 7″22.

It’s true what they say: do it regularly and you’ll get better at it. It’s a great start to what promises to be a great week! I run again Tuesday – or maybe tomorrow! I’m psyched! – and let’s see if I can shave off a few seconds more off that 5K.
